Reading this book is like visiting an eccentric aunt, who lives in a dim tchotchke-crammed apartment where she tells fortunes on the side. When she invites you in, she gives you a once-over and says, “Sit down and have some kugel; you look peaked. I got this receipe from that nice lady over at the bakery, the friend of your grandma’s, you remember her? She always said kugel soothed her heart chakra, because of the carbohydrates.”
In a nutshell, Journey of the Food is a delightful read if you like cooking, collecting recipes and hearing the stories behind the meals you eat. Aside from the title and the fact that it includes 78 recipes (and one for the dog), it doesn’t have a lot to do with the Tarot. I would have made the suit of Cups all about soups and beverages, for example. But it covers territory from drinks to dessert, and all the foods represented simply ooze with home-cooked nurturing. A good addition to any kitchen. Not geared toward vegetarians.
